Sheriff Monty Hughey

The Sheriff is the chief law enforcement officer for Butler County and has many responsibilities. Among those are providing public safety and law enforcement services to citizens of the county, overseeing the county jail operations, registering and monitoring offenders, and duties related to the court such as civil process service and court security.

Sheriff Monty Hughey respectfully serves Butler County as Sheriff and is a native of Butler County, born and raised in the El Dorado area, where he still resides. He has a long history of service with the Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff Hughey began his career in 1996. After graduating from the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center he started working as a patrol deputy assigned to the Douglass area. In 2000 he requested to become a K9 handler and was partnered with K9 Ruger, a czech shepherd. Their partnership lasted for four and a half years. During his eleven years in patrol, Deputy Hughey became Sergeant Hughey, and held various roles with the Sheriff’s Office to include radar instructor, felony car-stop instructor, and SWAT team member. In 2007 he became a team leader for SWAT.
Sergeant Hughey was promoted to Detective in 2007 and was assigned to the Investigations Division where he spent a great deal of time working cases involving crimes against children. While a Detective, he was assigned as a task force officer, partnered with the FBI, and participated in Operation Safe Streets, working person crimes, and targeting violent offenders. Also as a Detective, he was a part of the task force that was responsible for the creation of the Sunlight Children’s Home, the first children’s home in Butler County. He remained in Investigations until elected Sheriff in 2020.
